central America
While living in Mexico, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting several Central American countries… with more to come! This, in my opinion, is one of the world’s most underrated regions.
Also, I’ve done it all solo so be assured it’s safe enough for you to do the same.
Guatemala
I loved Guatemala with its UNESCO towns, Mayan ruins, striking natural scenery, and cute villages boasting spectacular views of Lake Atitlan. Throw in volcano hikes, coffee, affordability and a positive safety rating, and you have one of my favourite countries EVER!
Belize
With Caribbean culture on the islands and English as a first language, Belize feels distinct from its neighbours. Although the prices are high, it offers fantastic attractions like the Blue Hole, rich marine life, and caves full of Mayan skeletons. It’s a small country you can explore in as little as a week.
El Salvador
This lesser-visited gem is perfect to visit now its dark days are behind it. I had a refreshing experience and the locals are SO friendly! Extra points for tasty pupusas.
COSTA RICA
This is a pricey destination better suited to those on vacation than solo backpacking, however I still enjoyed Costa Rica. The nature is sublime, and very well cared for, and I was so happy to spot plenty of sloths!
Nicaragua
My second favourite country in Central (after Guatemala) was Nicaragua known for volcanic islands where you can wile away days or weeks, world-class surfing, sunsets and idyllic colonial towns.
With volcano boarding thrown in, it’s the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, as well as nature and culture.
Panama
I didn’t know much about Panama before visiting, but it surprised me. Mostly the variety: the misty, hiking haven of Boquette couldn’t be more different to glitzy Panama City nor the islands. I loved learning about indigenous Guna people in the San Blas Islands and Caribbean culture in Bocas del Toro.
